DAILY DEVOTION - APRIL 25

Listen to today's daily devotion on this video.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Psalm 139: 7-12

Many people love these beautiful poetic verses from Psalm 139. They reassure us that God is always with us. No matter how high we might soar, or how low our spirits might sink, God is always at our side, holding us close and seeking to guide us. The Psalmist hints that even if we’re trying to flee from God’s presence, we cannot get away from God. We cannot hide from God our actions and attitudes that displease our heavenly Father who is always good, righteous, and loving. And yet God has mercy on us even at these times when we turn away from him, and loves us still.

Imagine, then, how much compassion God has for us when we are actively seeking him, when we long for a sure sense of his presence, when we cry for his help and comfort, his guidance and peace. The love God has for us has no bounds. Our Triune God is the perfect Father, the lover of our souls, the shepherd who searches out, cares for, and guides his sheep to green pastures and still waters. As the Psalmist wrote, when it feels like the darkness is so pervasive that it will hide us and even the light will dim and become like night around us, darkness has no power over our God. God will be at our side, and the light of his Son will shine on us, surrounding us with love.

Let us pray with our CPC sisters and brothers . . .

Holy God, we praise and thank you for your steadfast love, patience, and compassion. These are difficult times, that heighten our awareness of how very much we need you. Help us to remember that you are our guide, and companion as we journey through this day. We are never alone, you are always reaching out to us in love with the light of your Son, in whose name we pray. Amen.
