Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Today, Pentecost Sunday, is often called the birthday of the Church. At the beginning of the book of Acts we read that it was on the day of Pentecost that Jesus' disciples received the Holy Spirit in the form of wind, and tongues of fire. The power of the Holy Spirit enabled them to proclaim God's mighty deeds - in every language on that day, and in every nation in the days to come as they founded the Church across the known world. Later in the book of Acts, Jesus' followers are described as "those people who have been turning the world upside down." As Jesus' disciples in this time and place, we too are promised the powerful gift of the Holy Spirit.

The turmoil experienced in our country this past week reminds us that our world needs the power of the Holy Spirit more than ever to turn things upside down. Deaths from COVID-19 in the U.S. have topped 100,000. Unemployment has reached a level not experienced in our country since the Great Depression. And once again a person of color, George Floyd, has died due to the use of excessive force by a small group of policemen, sparking heated and sometimes violent protests across our country, and words and acts of retaliation against the many police personnel who act with integrity and compassion as they risk their lives every day to keep our communities safe. We grieve all of these tragedies, and pray that the Holy Spirit guides, inspires, and empowers us to share the love and hope of Christ with all, to take a stand against injustice wherever we encounter it, and to devote ourselves to lives of prayer and spiritual growth.

We hope you all will join us at 11 am for our virtual fellow ship hour - and wear red, in celebration of Pentecost and the fiery passion the Holy Spirit inspires in Jesus' followers!

While we may be apart physically, Christ's love surrounds us and binds us together. We think of you and pray for you each day.

With love and blessings, Lolly and Bunny
