Dear Sisters and Brothers,

On this Sunday we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into heaven.

Jesus' Ascension occurred 40 days after his resurrection. During these 40 days, the risen Jesus appeared to his followers a number of times, proving to them that he had risen from the dead. We've reflected on two of these appearances of Jesus after his resurrection: the story of doubting Thomas and the story of Jesus appearing to two individuals traveling on the road to Emmaus.

Last Sunday we studied a passage where Jesus told his disciples that he would be leaving them, but that he would not leave them orphaned. He would ask the Father to send another advocate, the Holy Spirit, to be with them forever. The Holy Spirit was sent by the Father to the disciples on the 50th day after Jesus' resurrection, the day of Pentecost which we will celebrate next Sunday, May 31.

Sometimes in our celebration of Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost, the Ascension of Jesus does not receive much emphasis. But Jesus' Ascension into heaven is a story of God's power and God's plan. Its meaning for us is significant, as we hope you will learn and experience in today's worship.

At the conclusion of our worship, we have a special commemoration of Memorial Day. Following worship and the Memorial Day commemoration, we hope you will join us at 11 am for our virtual fellowship hour.
